Fountain House

The word “Clubhouse” derives from the original language that was used to communicate the work and vision of Fountain House, the first Clubhouse, which was started in New York in 1948. Since its inception, Fountain House has served as a model for all subsequent Clubhouses around the world. The term “Clubhouse” clearly communicates the message of membership and belonging, which is at the very heart of the Clubhouse way of working.

The Clubhouse Commitment to Each Member is Life-long & Free

Recovery

Clubhouses are built upon the belief that every member has the potential to recover and lead a personally satisfying life as an integrated member of society. Clubhouses are communities of people who are dedicated to one another’s success, and are organized around a belief that work, and work-mediated relationships are restorative and provide a firm foundation for growth.

The International Standards for Clubhouse Programs™ define the Clubhouse Model of rehabilitation. The International Standards serve as a “bill of rights” for members and a “code of ethics” for staff, boards and administrators. The Standards provide the basis for assessing Clubhouse quality through the Clubhouse International Accreditation Process™

Clubhouse International has 37 International Standards for Clubhouse Programs, which act as a bill of rights for members and a code of ethics for staff interventions to support work and vocation, such as the US’s Clubhouse, which builds livelihood skills and social support.  The individual placement and support programs are essential components of a comprehensive response to the goal to achieve inclusion for people with serious mental disorders.
